My Eyebrow Tinting Disaster!

On Monday I decided to tint my eyebrows for going on holiday. I have tinted my eyebrows before and had no allergic reaction at all. You are supposed to do a patch test before you use this, but I have never had a reaction so didn't see the point. (Also me being inpatient and lazy!) So I went ahead and tinted my eyebrows, doing everything by the book, putting Vaseline around the eyebrow area etc.

Everything was fine until a few hours later when the skin around my eyebrows started to go very red, hot and itchy. I didn't realise how bad the situation was until I looked in the mirror! I'm not even going to post any pictures of my horrible brows!

So with red itchy inflamed eyebrows I went to bed, waking up the next morning to find my eyelids and the area around my eyebrow completely swollen! They were so swollen that I could hardly open my eyes, and I tried everything from putting cold tea bags on my eyes to a frozen pack of Birds Eye peas! None of these things helped, and it was only that evening the swelling went down, but not completely.

The next day with my eyes still mildly swollen, my eyebrows were still red, sore and itchy, and I noticed little clear blisters starting to form. The type you get with a cold sore.

I decided to smother them in Blistex, which is a cream for cold sores and chapped lips. Today the blisters have gone, my eyebrows aren't as itchy and the redness has reduced considerably. The skin around the eyebrow area is flaking off now... but it seems that everything is clearing up and I'm slowly getting back to a normal looking face!!

Have you ever had a reaction like this?

  1. Oh no that sounds bad :( you should definately go to the doctor just in case you are allergic to something, my skin is really sensitive and gets inflamed very easily but disappears very quickly. I hope you are feeling better!x x x

  2. Omg that's horrible! I don't really have sensitive skin so nothing like that has ever happened to me. I'm glad to see you're getting better though!

  3. Thanks girlies, I'm just left with flaky skin now so it's getting better :)

I googled it and people have had reactions like going blind for days... scary stuff xx

  4. jesus - thats sound so scary. at least its getting better now. The only time I can relate is when I used hair removing creams on my eyebrows and they leave a red soreness behind, also sometimes when I dye my hair it feels like it is burning my scalp off.

I guess the moral of the story is to a reaction test. xx

  5. Hi lovely, I have used a super cheap home kit (should of guessed eh?) and the same happened to me. I rinsed my eye area and left my eye area bare for 2 days, then for a week used Elizabeth Ardens 8 hour cream. :( x

  7. @ Natalie- Yeah I will be doing patch tests for now on!

@ Hannah- Ahh that's horrible :( I've pretty much done the same, keeping it free of make up & everything. I really want to try 8 hour cream!

@ R May A- I would definately tell people to do a patch test if they're going to do it :)

  12. I've had this happen also, very itchy, red, blisters! I'll never do it again. I'm trying to find something, anything to make it look better. I don't know about Blistex, that might make it worse, and I'm a teacher, so I have to be out in public and people are rude and stare, uuggghhh!! WHY GOD???

    1. I had the same experience ladies, I was cute the day I got them done but that next morning I looked like a blowfish too. I cleaned my brows with Dial soap because it has a rich antibacterial ingredient in it. Then I used neosporin with aloe as well as hydrocortisone cream. It helped a lot. The only good to come out of this experience is that the redness makes my brows look a little thicker now. But I wonder if the damaged area will ever grow back because it's similar to a 1st or 2nd degree burn.

  14. I had a sudden reaction to Eyelure tint, as in, I had been using it for ages, then the last two times I used it to dye my eyebrows, the skin became very inflamed and puffy. Then it developed in to VERY itchy, dry skin with blisters. Not a good look. I know that it's a fact that you can develop an allergic reaction to anything, at any time, you don't have to have always had the allergy. Sucks because my eyebrows are fair and my hair is dark brown :( I used Germoline on the inflamed skin and that soothed it and it quickly cleared up thereafter. Wouldn't try dying them again as I know allergies can develop in to a more severe reaction - anaphylactic shock. EEEK!

  15. It's usually a reaction to a chemical called PPD. Read about it here: http://dermnetnz.org/dermatitis/paraphenylenediamine-allergy.html
I had a reaction twice, after using Eyelure on my eyebrows for years - swelling, blisters, dermatitis. I haven't gone near a hairdye since, but have bought one that is PPD-free, called NaturVital. It was the only one I could find, but seems to be good from what I have read. I am still a bit nervous about using any dye though, after the reaction! eeeek! BTW, PPD goes under about 15 different names, so look out for them on the website I have pasted. I can't believe this stuff isn't more warned against, it's horrible stuff! Oh and one more thing, sometimes even a patch test won't show any irritation, but you could still have one. Weird. Gxx

  17. I had my eyebrows at a nails salon on Thursday. And a couple hours later it turned red and felt really itchy and swollen. I iced it right away when I got home and the swollen went down. The next was still irritated Bute bearable but I went to urgent care and doc gave me steroid shot and predsobine for me to take oraly for 9 days. The swollen went down but still itching and a lot of blister build up on my eyebrows. Feeling so irritated and I can't stand the itch. I tried cleaning my brows with alcohol and peroxide. I put aquapore aka vaseline on but I don't think it's helping. I'm talking benadryl for itch. I don't want else to do.

  20. I know this is an old thread but I got my eyebrows tinted last Friday and didn't get ANY allergic reaction until the 3rd day (Monday!) and now 7 days after getting tinted, I look like shit! :( Never doing that again!!! I went to a doctor 2 days ago and she gave me anti-histamine to take 1x a day and steroid cream to apply to my eyebrows. Now, I am thinking when should I see an improvement? OMG the things e ladies do so we could look better!

I had a henna tattoo allergic reaction in 2007 and didn't know it was related to eyebrow tinting. The place I had it done in did not have any patch testing.

  21. I'm going through this right now! It's very early in the morning, can't sleep and turned to google for advice and found this thread . I am alergic to ppd and had the proper patch testing in a Sydney hospital about 8 yrs ago I have had natural hair colour for two yrs and was stupid enough to think I could outgrow this alergy and went and got eyelash brow wax and tint. It's my own fault, so painful red swollen blisters and uncontrollably itch. The reaction started day 2 now going onto day 4 and no relief in sight . Need a gp today. Will never do this again!!!

  25. I’m here to testify about what Dr James  did for me. I have been suffering from (GENITAL HERPES VIRUS) disease for the past 4 years and had constant pain and itching, especially in my private part. During the first year, I had faith in God that i would be cured someday. This disease started circulating all over my body and I have been taking treatment from my doctor nothing is working out, few weeks ago I came across a testimony of Pedro, on the internet testifying about a Herbalist called Dr James from West Africa, on how he cured Him from 7 years HSV 2. And He also gave the email address of this man... [drjamesherbalmix@gmail.com]..., advising anybody to contact him for help on any kind of diseases that he would be of help, so I emailed him telling him about my (HSV 2) he told me not to worry that I'm going to be cured!! Well, I never doubted him. I have faith he can cure me too,, Dr James prepared and sent me Healing Oil, Soap, roots and herbs which I took. In the first one week, I started experiencing changes all over me, after four weeks of using his Roots/ Herbs, Oil and Soap, I was totally cured. no more itching , pain on me anymore as Dr James assured me. After some time I went to my doctor to do another test. the result came out negative. So friends my advice is if you have such disease or know anyone who suffers from it or any other disease like  HPV, HBV, HIV/AIDS, ALS, HBP, CANCER,NEPHROTIC SYNDROME, etc. you can contact Dr James herbal mixed  the home of wellness direct on his.... drjamesherbalmix@gamil.com...  He is a good man,and He will help you.
